S.B. 291...

For those of you who know about this I thought I would give you a link to Nienna's blog so you can read about what happened yesterday, and what it means. Yes, the amendment was passed, and the House and Senate in Jeff City both passed the bill! The link if you want to read is here
Maybe I can post a couple pictures of the turnout. There were a LOT of homeschoolers there!

Where I speak of a sobering book...

The Vietnam War... I think many people don't really know what happened in that war. What very little I hear is either in praise of it for "helping stop communism" or bitterness about what happened. I know, it was an unjust war, and it was a mess. But we still had American men over there fighting, whether or not they wanted to, that our country ought to have supported as men while working to stop the war as a whole. I'm reading a book for school called America and Vietnam- the Elephant and the Tiger by Albert Marrin. It's not a pretty book, it's anything but... But it's history, and it's a reminder of how awful, confused, and messed-up that war was. If you want to better understand the Vietnam War it is highly worth reading. It is a sobering, saddening, breathtaking, wincing, maddening, frustrating account of a war that is little understood. I love history, because it is through history that we learn for the future. Don't get me wrong, I do not love reading the negative accounts of history, but I know that it is important to understand and learn from the past. Edmund Burke said, "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." and the Roman historian Livy once said, "The study of history is the best medicine for a sick mind; for in history you have a record of the infinite variety of human experience plainly set out for all to see; and in that record you can find yourself and your country both examples and warnings; fine things to take as models, base things, rotten through and through, to avoid." Albert Marrin does an excellent job of writing historical facts in such a way to hold your attention. It's not fiction, but all of his biographies and history books that I have read have been phenomenal.

You're probably wondering why I posted this. Well I'm in the middle of America and Vietnam, and it's been an eye-opening read the whole way, but just now I am reading of the turmoil, conflict, and division in the United States while the people of those states turn not just against the war, but against the men who fought in that war. The nasty, rotten way our country handled it, and the soldiers in it, has held me in deep thought. And I felt like I had to share it. How much of history do people not really understand...

Happy Birthday Monica/Nanee/Nienna/Mocha, etc.

Today is Monica's birthday! So I'm going to post a few things about sisters in general, and ones that apply specifically to my sister!

It's hard to be responsible, adult and sensible all the time. It's good to have a sister who's heart is as young as your own.

An older sister is a friend and defender--a listener, Conspirator, a counselor, and a sharer of delights. And sorrows too.
Sisters make the real conversations... not the saying But the never needing to say is what counts.

Sisters is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, But once the sisters are grown it becomes the strongest.

Having a sister is like having a best friend you can't get rid of. You know whatever you do they'll still be there.

If you don't understand how a woman could both love her sister dearly and want to wring her neck at the same time, then you were probably an only child.

When we fought, like couples who've lived together for years, we knew the most tender nerve to strike. But when we decided to cooperate, we became a force to reckon with.

A bosom friend--an intimate friend, you know-- A really kindred spirit to whom I can confide my inmost soul.

It's a great comfort to have an artistic sister! (most of the time... :P )

We've shared everything together, my sister and I. Even a room filled with laughter and tears And all our hopes and our fears. There are so many wonderful memories With many more to come as we grow older Together as sisters... and friends.

Happy Birthday Nienna! I love you and I pray that you will continue to give your heart to God so He will lead you where He wills. You've been a wonderful older sister to me, thanks!

Happy Birthday Momma!

Well, as you probably guessed from the title today is my mother's birthday! We have a running joke around our house about the many hats that Mom wears, so I thought this poem would be fitting:

Everything Mom
How did you find the energy, Mom
To do all the things you did,
To be teacher, nurse and counselor
To me, when I was a kid.
How did you do it all, Mom,
Be a chauffeur, cook and friend,
yet find time to be a playmate,
I just can't comprehend.
I see now it was love, Mom
That made you come whenever I'd call,
Your inexhaustible love, Mom
And I thank you for it all!

And this one:

Hidden Treasure

Wonder of wonders, deep mystery.
A virtuous woman who can be?
Hidden treasure deep in the sea.
Could that be you? Can that be me?

A corner pillar, a palace stone,
Carefully rendered to be His own.
a servant, a daughter of the throne.
A fertile seed that's deeply sown.

A ruby that shines cannot exceed
The beauty of a bountiful woman's deed
For she is ready in her family's need.
"All for the Father" is her creed.

These high virtues who can attain?
I have already failed them. Should I again?
Do I have the courage to call on His name?
He has the power, only I to blame?

Wonder of wonders, deep mystery.
A virtuous woman who will be?
Hidden treasure up out of the sea.
That could be you. That could be she.

Love you Momma!
